Delta Pi Chapter of Hillside, New Jersey, the 28th chapter chartered in the Eastern Region, joined the sisterhood of the National Sorority of Phi Delta Kappa, Inc. on June 19, 1982.
Delta Pi Chapter was organized December 5, 1981 at the home of Mrs. Mildred English, Hillside, New Jersey. Members of Alpha Chapter met with about 20 educators. This meeting was called to officially organize the pledge group under the guidance of Mrs. Evelyn Boyd, Dean of Pledges. She was assisted by Ms. June Day, Mrs. Mildred English, Mrs. Elizabeth Marshall, and Mrs. Rosetta Brown. They felt that the membership of Alpha Chapter was very large and, therefore, decided to form a new chapter in Hillside, New Jersey.
Alpha members worked hard with this group for more than five months. Together the women worked, learned, and grew as a unit. Finally, on June 18-19, 1982 the big day arrived, the chartering. The chartering ceremonies held at the Holiday Inn North, Newark, New Jersey, was officiated by the National President, Mrs. Ruby S. Couche, Eastern Regional Director, Dr. Juanita J. High and Eastern Regional Member-at-Large, Mrs. Ardena S. Dixon. The biggest thrill was having several Founders present–Mrs. Florence Steele Hunt, Dr. Gladys Nunery and Mrs. Julia Barnes.
Over the years, the chapter has grown and has been able to fulfill the mandates of the national body. One of its biggest achievements has been maintaining an active Youth Group throughout the years.
